The average American diet contains too many unhealthy carbohydrates, mainly in the form of sugar, potatoes and grains and too little protein and essential fatty acids.
I found Dr. Bernstien when I was collecting information for my research thesis. I was so impressed with his results I have been sharing his protocol with anyone I come in contact with who has Type II Diabetes or has a family member or friend diagnosed with the disease.
His moto is:
KEEP YOUR BLOOD SUGAR LOW & LEVEL!
If you have been diagnosed with Type II Diabetes, you must make this book your Bible.
Besides Dr. Bernstein's book I highly recommend a book with a terrible title, but it is loaded with information every person on this planet needs to understand and practice.
The Book is "Life Without Bread". It is available at Amazon or any other bookseller on line or in the malls.
Dr.Richard Bernstein is a Diabetic. The methods he advocates for treating Diabetes are saving lives.
Go to Dr. Bernstein's Web Site You can read portions of his book on line or order his new and revised edition published Sept 2003. Make sure your physician knows about Dr. Bernstein's book and his treatments. They could save your life.
Many of his methods were proven in the study known as the UKPDS. An abstract of the study is in the next paragraph.
The United Kingdom Prospective Diabetes Study,(UKPDS) was implemented from 1977 to 1997, with 4209 newly diagnosed non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus patients, to determine if improved glucose control is effective in reducing the incidence of complications. The study provided an answer about the value of maintaining blood glucose control in the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus.
The study conclusions were as follows:
1. A decrease of complications resulted in study participants who kept their two to three month average blood glucose values level. Patients able to maintain a HbA1c of 7.0% had a 35% reduction of diabetic complication. Insulin and sulfonylureas were each effective with no increase in the incidence of cardiovascular deaths, myocardial infarctions or sudden deaths. However, both therapies increased incidence of hypoglycemia and weight gain. In overweight T2DM patients, the use of metformin the therapy reduced the risk of any diabetes-related complications by 32%, diabetes-related deaths by 42%, and myocardial infarctions by 39%. In contrast to use of insulin and sulfonylureas, metformin use was associated with no weight gain and little increase in the risk of hypoglycemia.
2. The study also reported the importance of lowering blood pressure. Blood pressure control reduced the risk of diabetes-related complications by 24%, diabetes-related deaths by 32%, and vascular complications by 37%. Since 59% of deaths in this study were due to heart disease, these patients characteristics were re-analyzed, and found to have modifiable risk factors for CV disease. These included high blood glucose values, high blood pressure, elevated LDL, lowered HDL, and smoking. The UKPDS group started a new study called the Lipids in Diabetes Study (LDS) to further delineate the issue of using statin drugs to reduce the risk of CAD in diabetic patients. Results of this expanded study are expected in 2005.
About one year ago, my 48 year old, overweight son was not feeling well. The symptoms he was exhitibing were pretty typical of Diabetes. When we convinced him to get a check up, his blood sugar was 556. Needless to say that got his attention. He immediatly changed his diet, began taking oral medication, exercising and following Dr. Bernstien's protocol. Even I was amazed when in less than two weeks his blood sugars were routinely under 100. He has lost over 40 pounds and he is maintaining his Low and Level blood sugars.
Recommendations for diabetics based on UKPDS results are:
1. Lower blood glucose levels with a target HbA1c goal of at least 7.0%.
